The Henderson Fire Department was organized in 1914 and until 1927 only had a bucket brigade for fire protection. The City of Henderson placed Jess Gibbins in charge of the department and he was assisted by 20 volunteer firefighters. The first paid firefighter crew was organized in 1916.
Today, the Henderson Fire Department has 35 firefighters. Twenty full time paid firefighters and 15 volunteer firefighters work out of two stations located within the city limits. The department covers 103 square miles and provides and receives mutual aid as needed from all of the Rusk County Volunteer Fire Departments.
The Department has 28 medical first responders and holds an annual Pink T-Shirt fundraiser to support those who are in the fight against cancer. This fundraiser is held the first week in October.
The Volunteer Department meets on the first and third Monday of every month at Central Fire Station located at 401 West Main Street, Henderson, Texas.
